This week on Mumpreneur Monday I am delighted to introduce Rachel from Iamrachel. Rachel makes beautiful handmade enamel Jewellery and gifts.
When Rachel was 20 she trained as a primary school teacher in Bristol. She loved working with children but found the job to be a lot of work with high pressure & very little time for herself. During the 7 years she taught she suffered with stress & depression on a couple of occasions and she thus decided she could no longer teach. After some time contemplating what she was going to do rachel found a job advert where a local family were looking for a live out nanny. She met the family, had an interview & started working for them soon after.
"I loved being a part time nanny for the 3 children & still keep in touch with them now. I left the job to have my son 2 and a half years ago"
Rachel found her passion for enamelling after doing an evening course around 8 years ago and quickly bought a kiln and all the kit needed to enamel at home. She started selling her makes at craft fairs and on Etsy and got a great response. Growing the business was initially slow but in the last 18 months it has really taken off.
The lead up to Christmas 2017 was very busy, her sales soared much more than ever before and although she was 6 months pregnant with her daughter and had a 2 year old she didn’t want to shut her online shop or turn down sales. She knew she was building the business for their future and so despite having lots on personally with a new baby on the way she pushed on.
“I love that can spend most of my time with the children but also run a business alongside being a mum. It gives me something else to focus on other than Mum duties, although some days being a mum is time consuming enough without anything extra in the mix”
Most of Rachel’s sales come from Etsy but she also stocks her orders in a few shops and she gets orders from friends & family.
“People often say my pieces look even better in the flesh than in photos, even though I’ve spent a lot of time recently perfecting my photography & branding”
Rachel has rapidly grown followers on Social media, particularly on Twitter after winning Theo Paphitis’ sought after #sbs title last year. She is also a part of the exclusive @sparkleshowcases team & she partakes in the themed online market nights. Rachel says that these events challenge her to make new enamel pieces whilst still keeping to her bright geometric signature designs. Many of the makers in the group are also mums.
“It’s great to chat to them about the challenges of being a mum and running a small business. It helps me realise that we are all in a similar position. One thing I would tell other mumpreneurs is - ‘give yourself a break’! Yes, I should listen to my own advice! Whether you have a very small side business or run a massive empire - take a deep breath, have some down time and treat your self. Yes, we are lucky that we don’t have to get up at the same time every day, go to a job we may dislike & come home just before bed time, however, we look after the kids 24/7 plus manage a business which we can never get away from. It’s always there! Messages to reply to, phone calls to make, supplies to order, products to design, social media posts to write and the list goes on - you definitely deserve a treat” #mamayougotthis
Rachel was kind enough to send me a pair of her beautiful enamel earrings. I fell in love with the design when I saw them. They are elegent and unique. Rachels personality and talent shines through in her products and I definitely have my eye on more than a few of her other products.
It has been an absolute pleasure working with Rachel. She is amazing at what she does and so talented whilst also being very humble. When I first started talking with Rachel her second baby had only just been born. It amazed me that she was still working and still creating her designs whilst adjusting to life with a second baby. This in itself is a testament to the success of the company and her success as a Mumpreneur. I have no doubt that IamRachel will continue to flourish in the coming months.
Rachel would like to treat all Guilty Mummy readers to 10% off all of her enamel jewellery and gifts using the Code: MUMMYTREAT at the Etsy checkout. I told you she was pretty awesome didn’t I?
I would love for you to go and show Rachel some love over on her social channels as well as of course visiting her brilliant etsy shop!
